The Perth Wildcats hosted the Melbourne Tigers on Friday 24th January. After a slow start to the game with both teams stuggling to get into their rythem, the Perth Wildcats fnished the first qaurter ahead by one point, 17 to 16.
As the game unfolded the packed house at the Perth Arena witnessed a nail bitting game unfold. The Wildcats were trailing the Melbourne Tigers in the four quarter, but in the dying minutes the home team closed the gap and ended up tying it up 80 points a piece with a few seconds left in the game. Enter Mark Worthington and a buzzer beating three pointer that gave the visitors the win with 83 points to the Wildcats 80. It was only fitting that Worthington hit the three, having played all 40 minutes in the game and producing some huge numbers for the night (24 points on 8/15 shooting, 10 rebounds, 2 assist, 3 turnovers and 2 steals).
That was the Wildcats first home loss at the Perth Arena for the 2013/14 season, and it comes at a crucial time as the finals approach and the top half of the NBL ladder chases the Wildcats top stop. If there as a silver lining to the loss it lies with Tom Jervis – with Matt Knight sitting the game out due to concussion, Jervis had a solid night with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists in 23 minutes of play.
Leading scorers for the night:
- Tom Jervis – 21 points
