The Perth Wildcats opened their 2013/14 NBL campaign on Friday night with a thrilling 83 – 80 win over the Adelaide 36ers at the Perth Arena.
Its been a long off-season for the NBL, but not necessarily a quiet one with plenty going on behind the scenes at NBL and Basketball Australia HQ. But the basketball offseason for me means its been several months since I shot basketball. Apart form photographing the Australian Boomers versus the Chinese National team in July, the last time I photographed professional basketball was last season’s NBL Grand Final series. Just like the players on the court, perfection comes with practice. Whilst the technical settings don’t change (and you don’t forget them), what comes with practise is being able to read the play (from a photographers perspective). Knowing where the ball will go and when. Being ready for the play ahead of the play.
But in the end its just like learning to ride a bike. Once you’ve done it once you never forget.
